Ingredients
  

  • 3 ½ cups 440g bread flour
  • 1 ¼ cups 300ml warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar for the boiling water

Instructions
 

  • Activate the Yeast: Combine warm water (110°F) and sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it rest for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil, then mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Allow to Rise: Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rest in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Shape the Bagels: Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, poke a hole in the center, and stretch it into a bagel shape.
  • Boil the Bagels: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add honey or brown sugar. Boil the bagels for 1 minute on each side, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
  • Add Toppings: Sprinkle sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or seasoning if desired.
  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the bagels for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Cool and Serve: Let the bagels cool on a wire rack before serving.
