Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup of grits stone-ground, quick-cooking, or instant
  • 4 cups of water or substitute with milk for creamier grits
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheese cheddar or your favorite
  • Optional toppings: cooked shrimp crispy bacon, or fresh herbs

Instructions
 

  • Boil the Liquid: Heat 4 cups of water or milk in a medium saucepan until it begins to boil. Add 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • Add the Grits: Slowly pour 1 cup of grits into the boiling liquid while whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
  • Cook the Grits: Lower the heat to a simmer. Stir frequently and cook until the grits thicken and become creamy. 1- Quick-cooking grits: 5-7 minutes. 2- Stone-ground grits: 20-30 minutes
  • Add Butter and Cheese: Stir in 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. If desired, mix in 1/2 cup of shredded cheese for extra flavor.
  • Serve and Enjoy : Spoon the grits into bowls. Add toppings like shrimp, bacon, or fresh herbs if desired. Serve warm.
