Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients
  

For the Pie Crust:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 –4 tablespoons ice water

For the Apple Pie Filling:

  • 2 large apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour or cornstarch for thickening
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For the Egg Wash (Optional):

  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water

Instructions
 

Prepare the Dough:

  • Mix flour and salt in a bowl.
  • Add cold butter and combine until crumbly.
  • Add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  • Shape into a disk, wrap, and chill for 30 minutes.

Make the Filling:

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples thinly.
  • Toss them with sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour (or cornstarch), and lemon juice.

Roll Out the Dough:

  • Roll the chilled dough into a circle about 1/8 inch thick.
  • Place it into a pie dish, trimming any excess.

Assemble the Pie:

  • Pour the apple filling into the crust and dot with butter.
  • Cover with another rolled-out crust or create a lattice design. Seal and crimp the edges.

Apply Egg Wash (Optional):

  • Brush the top crust with the egg wash for a golden finish.

Bake:

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling bubbles.

Cool and Serve:

  • Let the pie cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
