Mix Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
Mix Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup milk (or buttermilk)
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup melted butter
Combine and Stir Gently
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spoon or spatula until just combined. Don’t overmix.
Pour and Bake
- Pour the batter into the greased dish or skillet. Smooth the top.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool and Serve
- Let it rest for 5 minutes. Slice and serve warm with butter, jam, or honey.
