Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola

Method
 

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. Add wet ingredients: In another bowl, beat the egg, then mix in melted butter and buttermilk.
  3. Combine and form dough: Add wet mixture to dry ingredients. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Roll and cut: On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1/2 inch thick. Cut out donut shapes using a cutter or two round glasses.
  5. Heat oil: In a deep pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry donuts: Fry 2–3 at a time, about 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  7. Drain and cool: Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve: Enjoy plain or dust with powdered sugar.
